Vermont Shocks #10 UMass Lowell with 5-3 Victory in Hockey East Showdown: Daily Upsets

MASSACHUSETTS--On Friday, February 7, the #10 Umass Lowell River Hawks (14-9-3) (Hockey East 7-7-2)  faced the Vermont Catamounts (10-13-3) (Hockey East 5-9-2) in a Hockey East clash at the Tsongas Center. Vermont would upset the River Hawks as they won 5-3.


What Went Down?


2nd period:

With only 3:17 into the period Vermont would open the scoring up as Joel Maatta after a Umass Lowell turnover right in front of the net.


With 43 seconds after the first Vermont goal, they would score again as Xavier Henry shoots it from the blue line through a crowd in front of the net.


Just 52 seconds after UVM’s second goal they would give themselves a bigger lead as Jens Richards tipped one from up front.



Umass Lowell would finally get one with 10:04 into the frame as Lowell’s Owen Cole would dig one in from the side of the net.


Less than 6 minutes after Lowell’s first goal they would score again as Chris Delaney would bang home a rebound to cut Vermont’s lead to one.


1:30 after Lowell’s goal, Vermont would be the next to score as Timofei Spitservo threw a puck on the net from below the faceoff circle.


3rd Period:

Lowell would get the first of the period as with 8:23 into the frame Ben Meehan would snipe one from the slot to make UVM’s lead 1 again.



Vermont would finish the game off, as 18:21 into the third period, Timofei Spitserov would get an empty-net goal.


Summary: 

UMass Lowell applied consistent pressure throughout the game, especially in the final period, but their efforts to equalize were unsuccessful. The River Hawks’ defense worked diligently to contain Vermont’s offense, but the Catamounts managed to capitalize on critical opportunities. Despite a rally by UMass Lowell, the game concluded with Vermont securing the victory.
